South of Town

Sonja Kobrehel (born in the former Yugoslavia) is a Canadian visual artist based in British Columbia, recognized for her expressive acrylic paintings that range from abstract to semi-abstract works, often featuring personal and whimsical imagery.

She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Novi Sad before moving to Canada, where she spent about two decades living and working in Vancouver prior to settling in Powell River.

Although she has explored various media, acrylic painting remains central to her practice. Her work is distinguished by intricate patterns, confident brushwork, and a strong emphasis on the relationships between color, form, and line. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, she has exhibited widely in Canada and internationally.

Her work has appeared in publications such as Lounge, Raum und Wohnen, Artintervention, and Art Tour International. She has received several awards, including Best of Show at the Arts at the Port Fine Arts Show in Washington and recognition from organizations in British Columbia and New York.

Kobrehel continues to create paintings, collages, drawings, and mixed-media pieces that explore emotional and experiential themes through abstraction and visual rhythm.
