Open Call for Participants “Raise Your Voice”
Community Art Project

About

The project “Raise Your Voice” is a collaboration art workshop/installation project which focuses on raising the voice of mothers and single mothers facing ongoing Domestic Violence (DV) and Post-Separation Abuse (PSA). The project draws inspiration from the Japanese art of mending ceramics, Kintsugi; embracing flaws and imperfections that combine to form powerful artworks to increase public awareness and to fight against DV and PSA. Mothers often remain silent and in abusive relationships, because they are afraid, they are ashamed of their situation, they blame themselves, and they are aware of how little protection is available to ensure their safety and the safety of their children. PSA is also not uncommon for single mothers who left their abusers. After the relationship ends, the abusers set their sights on the children to exert control and, terrorize the healthy parent using custody, child support, parenting as a form of ongoing control, and harassment. DV and PSA abuse can have lasting effects on children can be
passed down to generations. These issues are a secret hidden in the dark even though there are countless women in the same situation. It is time for a change. Change is a difficult task; however, we can take our first step toward change if we all raise our voices and increase awareness in our community. The project emboldens participants to realize we are not alone, and encourages everyone to participate in bringing change.

In workshops participants will share stories, information, and ideas; and through artwork creatively express our struggles, messages, and hopes in dealing with abuse. Participants are welcome to use any materials and art forms. All skill levels are welcome. Final artworks will be presented publicly in an exhibition. Participants are not obliged to include their names. All steps of this project can be a healing process as we gain information, strength, and confidence to fight against Violence through working together. Acknowledgment to the qathet Art Centre for providing the space through the MEND: Radical Care Program.
